The Ultimate Groomsman Guide: What You Need to Do on the Wedding Day

Being asked to be a groomsman is an honor—but it also comes with responsibilities, especially on the big day! Your job is to support the groom, help keep the day running smoothly, and, of course, have a great time. Here’s a complete breakdown of what you need to do to get ready and make sure the wedding day is a success.

1. Start the Day Right

The wedding day can be long, so it’s important to wake up on time, eat a good breakfast, and stay hydrated. If you’re feeling rough from the night before, drink plenty of water and have some ibuprofen handy.

2. Get Dressed on Time

Make sure you have everything you need before heading to the venue. Here’s a quick checklist:

✔️ Suit/tuxedo (make sure it’s wrinkle-free!)

✔️ Dress shoes and socks (don’t show up in white gym socks)

✔️ Tie or bowtie

✔️ Cufflinks, belt, and any other accessories

✔️ Grooming essentials (deodorant, cologne, hair products)

Plan to be dressed and ready at least an hour before the ceremony starts to allow time for photos and last-minute adjustments.

3. Support the Groom

Your main job is to make sure the groom is relaxed and enjoying the day. Keep him calm, remind him to eat, and make sure he has everything he needs. If he’s feeling nervous, crack a joke or help him stay focused on the excitement of the day.

4. Be Ready for Photos

Wedding photos are a big part of the day. Listen to the photographer, be patient, and make sure your suit looks sharp. Try to avoid slouching or looking distracted—these photos will be around forever!

5. Know Your Ceremony Duties

During the ceremony, you may have a role such as:

• Escorting a bridesmaid down the aisle

• Standing at the altar with the groom

• Holding the rings (if you’re the best man)

Make sure you know where you need to be and when—the last thing you want is to be scrambling last minute!

6. Keep the Reception Energy Up

Once the ceremony is over, it’s time to celebrate! As a groomsman, you help set the tone for the reception. Get out on the dance floor, mingle with guests, and keep the party going. If the groom needs anything during the night, be there to help.

7. Be a Responsible Party Member

It’s a celebration, but don’t go overboard on the drinks too early. Pace yourself, be respectful to guests, and make sure the groom is having a great time. If he’s had a little too much fun, be the one to help him get back to his room safely.

8. Get Home Safely

At the end of the night, make sure you have a plan to get home or back to your hotel safely. If you’re responsible for returning your tux or suit rental, set a reminder to drop it off on time the next day.
